BREAKDOWN: “Sunroof”, Maintaining
February 18, 2012
“Sunroof”, Maintaining
“We take hold of melodies and we unload our memory to the street like Kennedy at the hand of his enemies.” – MAZON
The results are in …. and it looks like “Sunroof” is the people’s choice from Maintaining. Awww maannn, I can’t wait until mother nature makes up her mind and finally decides to let the warm weather come through so we can ride through cityblaaaastingthis joint! To me, this is the “feel good” song of the project. That’s why I can’t wait to take it on a road trip and let it circulate through the streets!
INSPIRATION: I know when I listen to any kind of music, I fall in love with it for one of two reasons; either it touches me musically with the actual beat or it touches me lyrically somewhere and puts me in a good place. I wanted to give people something to sing to, something to ride to. Personally, I can ride to all my s—, but I don’t just make the music for me, it’s for y’all too.
BREAKDOWN: Verse 1 —- Painting pictures from a city they forgot about / Without a doubt, I took a detour from the college route / It ain’t no pride in that, I just ain’t hiding that / Armageddon is where we heading, no surviving that / Only living life once, niggas on that might stuff / I be bout that action, hustling hard, stacking / For a rainy day, but what can I say / The lessons of my present lifestyle done made me this way / I give a fuck what you say, some food for your toupee / I pearl the whole bouquet, then play my man in 2k / Then probly chill uptown, ain’t shit to do in the Burg / My OG should be home, but I ain’t saying no words / Shit is real, sucka niggas conceal the truth / Without a deal, keep it real, and I’m still the truth / I hold it down for my city, I’m getting busy / On my way downtown, the god looking pretty / Verse 2 —- They think I’m taking long? I think they patience gone / But its all good, I’m from a small hood / Known as Burg City tho, shot the first video / Shout out my supporters, all my haters get with me tho / Best be on your tippy toes, wilder than a Black Hippy show / And I ain’t been to one yet, I just seen the video / Meet that nigga Millie tho, in center city Philly tho / We finally getting through when shit was moving really slow / Nosebleeds, finally getting some better seats / We sit with celebrities, cause we got the longevity / We take all the melodies, and we unload our memory / To the street like Kennedy, at the hands of his enemy / Naw, this ain’t what I pretend to be / This is truly an entity of a nigga’s identity / That’s why I keep a pen with me / Or just write it down mentally / I give you my life, wondering will they remember me?

✙Breakdown: “The Secret”, Maintaining
February 3, 2012
“The Secret”, Maintaining
“..I’m in the rain doing a buck fifty, hydroplaning — What shorty? — ‘Where you disappear to, son?” — Maintaining, putting myself in a position most of these rappers aint in.” -Jay-Z
This line explains the title of the project perfectly.
It had been a little while since I had released The Reminder back in April of 2010 and everybody was wondering what I was up to. I was doing a lot of learning and basically finding my way in life .. Music has always been a part of my life and will forever remain but the pressures of everyday life were distracting me from my craft. And my own bad habits were keeping me from growing. At least once a week someone would ask me what was I working on or when something new was coming out and I wouldn’t have an answer .. I got tired of it. I felt like I misusing my talent.
That’s why I started off “The Secret” with — “I’m more focused then I’ve ever been. I’m in these streets campaigning like the President. I’m in my city maintaining with the residents .. God given talent with the heart to pedal it.” It really takes a crazy motherf*cker to take the path I’m taking and trying to defy the odds that I don’t pay attention to. Becoming a successful rapper is probably more rare than making an NBA team but I don’t care. I’m going to be great.
Another one of my favorite lines from this song was –
“Remember in Baltimore when I lived in the basement?/ Wasn’t a weekend I don’t think where I didn’t get wasted/ Where you could catch me in the lab like Dexter scripting lectures/ Student of the game but a stranger to my professors.”
That line’ll tell you about my college career in a nutshell. It just didn’t work out. School isn’t for me, at least not right now. I’m not saying that nobody should go to school and get an education, I’m just speaking from a personal standpoint. I realized that I had to make other moves in order for me to grow as a man and as an artist, which is my main concern. I developed a plan and I’m sticking to it. If you want to be a doctor or a lawyer or even a plumber, you have to go to school and there’s no getting around that. Come up with a five year plan and execute it. Forward motion ..
