✙Breakdown: “The Secret”, Maintaining

“The Secret”, Maintaining

“..I’m in the rain doing a buck fifty, hydroplaning — What shorty? — ‘Where you disappear to, son?” — Maintaining, putting myself in a position most of these rappers aint in.” -Jay-Z

This line explains the title of the project perfectly.

It had been a little while since I had released The Reminder back in April of 2010 and everybody was wondering what I was up to. I was doing a lot of learning and basically finding my way in life .. Music has always been a part of my life and will forever remain but the pressures of everyday life were distracting me from my craft. And my own bad habits were keeping me from growing. At least once a week someone would ask me what was I working on or when something new was coming out and I wouldn’t have an answer .. I got tired of it. I felt like I misusing my talent.

That’s why I started off “The Secret” with — “I’m more focused then I’ve ever been. I’m in these streets campaigning like the President. I’m in my city maintaining with the residents .. God given talent with the heart to pedal it.” It really takes a crazy motherf*cker to take the path I’m taking and trying to defy the odds that I don’t pay attention to.  Becoming a successful rapper is probably more rare than making an NBA team but I don’t care. I’m going to be great.

Another one of my favorite lines from this song was –

“Remember in Baltimore when I lived in the basement?/ Wasn’t a weekend I don’t think where I  didn’t get wasted/ Where you could catch me in the lab like Dexter scripting lectures/ Student of the game but a stranger to my professors.”

That line’ll tell you about my college career in a nutshell. It just didn’t work out. School isn’t for me, at least not right now. I’m not saying that nobody should go to school and get an education, I’m just speaking from a personal standpoint. I realized that I had to make other moves in order for me to grow as a man and as an artist, which is my main concern. I developed a plan and I’m sticking to it. If you want to be a doctor or a lawyer or even a plumber, you have  to go to school and there’s no getting around that. Come up with a five year plan and execute it. Forward motion ..

Duce Block

Yoooo, I need everybody to listen and download this mixtape right here! Duce Block Freestyles Vol. 1 is brought to you by my younger homies Stackzz and Cue Bizzo, holding it down for YDM (Young, Dedicated & Motivated).

On this high-energy ride, expect to hear the slick punchlines and steady flows about the West Philadelphia inner-city life that Will Smith left out of his rhymes. At 16 and 18, I feel like these two have some promise in the Philly music scene. And if they keep at it long enough, they can excel a lot further. I enjoyed recording this mixtape for them and am looking forward to future work. The project features Damani of the Phli Hi Club and myself.

Ground Up – “Romantic Comedy” (Mixtape Download)

They did it again! The Ground Up gang continues to pump out good music, at an admirable rate. These cats are some of the hardest working artists I’ve ever been around; any success their receiving is rightfully owned. Romantic Comedy is a short EP they recently released. Looking at its title, you would think you’re in for a Ghostdini experience, but instead you find yourself nodding the whole time! It’s some dope, honest hip-hop and most importantly it gives you a unique experience. Every time you listen to Ground Up you can count on being invited into their world, and that’s what makes their music so dope.

Not to mention they’re good homies with the sponsors [Dub Caesar] of my upcoming project, MAINTAINING!

The only feature on here was yours truly.. I was honored for the placement. There will definitely be some work done in the future. The collab is called “All Night” and it’s a for sure BANGER! It was produced by Harrisburg’s Modurn Marvles and it will also be on MAINTAINING!
